Five years ago, a team of six* design professionals and business owners founded Werkhouse to bridge the gap between graduate expectations and industry needs by creating an immersive studio weekend for young creatives.
On Saturday 20th November, we opened our doors to host the fourth Werkhouse!
We began the weekend by splitting the participants into six teams and briefing everyone on a project scenario from Fareshare SW (after fuelling up for the day on fresh croissants, of course!). The teams then had one and a half days to prepare a response that answered the brief, grabbed the judges' attention, and made business sense.
The design industry mentors volunteering for the weekend supported the participants with helping them to rapidly develop ideas under pressure, work as an effective team and communicate design concepts to clients – helping them prepare for the future and understand how agencies operate.
What a great weekend! I feel enormously proud that we’ve managed to give 30 students the Werkhouse experience again – especially in current times when university life is fragmented and social interactions are a bit lacking... it felt extra special. Seeing the students develop and grow in confidence over the weekend was incredibly inspiring. In fact, every year I always forget how magical Werkhouse is until we see it happen all over again! Plus knowing that this year we’ve provided some useful thinking for Fareshare SW that they can take away and run with, made it all the more worthwhile"
“What a rewarding weekend! The students came into their own throughout the weekend, demonstrating their ability to work with a team, dissect the brief and generate lovely ideas! Having a real-life client and real-life problem to solve made it all the more worth it for both the students and professionals. It made all the difference knowing what you were bringing to life through ideas could actually impact a charity and the volunteers that represent them. A brilliant example of a meaningful brief, outstanding teamwork and the best of a bunch creatives!"
If you'd be interested in participating in Werkhouse next year, we'd recommend keeping an eye on social media where they will be releasing information about applications for 2022. Click here to watch a video for what to expect from the weekend.
